Diflex wins over new customers with the acquisition of a KODAK FLEXCEL NX System

OverviewDiflex has always opted for technological innovation, offering prepress and supplies for the flexographic industry that set it apart from other suppliers to the market. Its success is based on the experience of its staff, around 60 employees working in the company's three branches located in Madrid, Valencia and Portugal, and on the guarantee of quality and respect for the environment, which have been certified for years. To serve all the sectors of the flexographic market, the company has created three distinct divisions: Diflex embalaje Flexible [Flexible packaging], Diflex División Cartón [Paperboard Division] and Diflex Suministros [Supplies].A year ago, Diflex decided to acquire a KODAK FLEXCEL NX System in order to meet customer demand for digital plates capable of overcoming the limits of flexography, enabling the company to offer a wider range of options for its customers' container and packaging innovations. After twelve months of operation, Diflex has just achieved Kodak Certified Partner status for its work and is satisfied with the results achieved with this image processing technology, as well as the innovative materials in the KODAK FLEXCEL NX System, which have enabled it to expand its customer base.ChallengeSince its inception in 1995, Diflex has enjoyed unstoppable growth thanks to a strategy of production process digitisation and automation, entailing continuous incorporation of new technologies to provide the best possible responses to customers' flexographic needs. In view of this corporate philosophy, it is no wonder that Diflex was looking for a digital plate production system that would offer efficiency in production, stability and repeatability, as well as high image quality, and according to the company's Managing Director, María Teresa Mesa, this is precisely what FLEXCEL offers.SolutionMaría Teresa Mesa explains that in the company's decision to acquire this technology, "the decisive factor was seeing the high-quality results obtained with KODAK FLEXCEL NX System in various types of printing, as well as the results achieved by other printers who were already using these plates and were satisfied with the reported benefits in terms of faster job start-ups and fewer losses. This, combined with our customers' demand for this service, led us to go ahead without hesitation and invest in a KODAK FLEXCEL NX System, and we can now safely say that we are very satisfied with the results as they are exactly as we had expected."Diflex's Director, Miguel Ángel Ruiz, describes some of the advantages of working with FLEXCEL NX Plates: "They practically eliminate the need to divide line screens, and KODAK DIGICAP NX Patterning helps to increase density throughout the tonal scale and make it possible to eliminate some spot colours. Some of these plates last between two and five times longer than other digital plates and come up to color faster, reducing start-up time and preparation waste by 25%. They also allow us to achieve a cleaner run with fewer stops."For Ms Mesa, the acquisition of the KODAK FLEXCEL NX System "was the right decision, as it has helped us win new customers by expanding our range of solutions and providing higher quality results. This enables our customers to obtain better printing results without having to invest in any equipment themselves."BenefitsDiflex's Director feels that "becoming a Kodak Certified Partner is a bonus for our customers as it represents a guarantee that work will be carried out properly. Not just because we say so, but also because we comply with all the criteria laid down by Kodak. Therefore, when we explain that these plates will improve process stability and consistency, provide better screens and process printing, better ink adaptability or ease of adjustment, they can be sure that this is what they will actually get as we can back this up with certification."If having this certification represents a benefit to regular Diflex customers, Ms Mesa also feels it serves as a good letter of introduction to potential customers. This new technology has helped the company to win new customers in the food, plastics and label markets. If we add to this a wide range of products and services, as well as personalised customer service, Ms Mesa has no doubt as to the key to the company's success.Gilles Corbé, Key Account Manager Packaging Commercial Imaging Kodak Iberia, explains that, "the Kodak system utilises KODAK SQUARESPOT Imaging Technology to offer exceptional repeatability and image quality. Combined with the KODAK DIGICAP NX Patterning option, which considerably improves ink transfer from the plate surface, gravure-like solids can be obtained without the need to lay down more ink. This means that the printers can avail themselves of a wider range of colours in comparison with traditional digital flexography."Bearing in mind Diflex's corporate philosophy of offering every available technology on the market to allow customer choice, Ms Mesa is convinced that the company will continue to integrate new advances as they arise in the market. Consequently, it currently has in its sights the possibility of introducing the KODAK Plate for the corrugated paperboard market.#About Kodak Kodak is a technology company focused on imaging for business. Carey Color Responds to Market Demand with Investment in Second KODAK FLEXCEL Direct System

ROCHESTER, N.Y., September 11 — Carey Color, an Ohio-based full service prepress provider, is preparing to install a second KODAK FLEXCEL Direct System. The company installed its original KODAK FLEXCEL Direct System three years ago, and is now responding to strong market demand with a second installation as flexographic printers have increasingly learned the benefits of printing with direct engraved elastomers. Carey Color has seen demand for in-the-round sleeves increase significantly. With multiple locations, more than 100 employees and a reputation for delivering dynamic solutions for their customers, Carey Color serves the packaging segment with a deep knowledge of elastomers for flexographic printing. The company has helped a broad and growing base of clients realize the quality and print production benefits that the technology has to offer. "We've seen steady growth in demand for sleeves," said Adam Smrdel, Director of Flexography, Carey Color Inc. "In addition to the overall growing popularity of continuous designs in flexo, we are experiencing demand for larger repeats. This is accomplished by building up material wall thickness while simultaneously maintaining inside diameters, something that cannot be achieved with photopolymer technology. Most importantly, however, printers are starting to request sleeves for all colors in the job, rather than just the single sleeve they may have used in the past. They are starting to really appreciate the quality, run length, productivity and waste reduction that the elastomer in-the-round sleeves enable." Carey Color also works on numerous projects that involve a transition from rotogravure to flexographic production. With ever-increasing changes in graphic design and the frequent need to load balance between flexographic and gravure processes based on run length, flexographic printing with elastomer sleeves offers a cost-effective alternative to gravure with excellent quality, print speeds and durability. When asked about the decision to invest in a second KODAK FLEXCEL Direct System, Smrdel cited fast engraving speeds, the ability to quickly change sleeves and the built-in quality control features as key deciding factors. "We love the Kodak technology," he enthused. "The engraving quality and exceptional speeds have allowed us to really drive this market forward. In fact, we like the technology so much we are also making plans to transition our dry offset business to elastomer engraving as well. The second unit will give us the ability to achieve that while continuing to support the growth in the flexo side of the business." The KODAK FLEXCEL Direct System features innovative, energy-efficient, high-power semiconductor laser imaging technology, Kodak-formulated press-ready elastomers and workflow software for accurate image reproduction. This outstanding combination of technologies offers sleeves and plates for flexographic printing superior in both quality and productivity potential. In the round (ITR) platemaking for flexographic printing, which was once labor intensive, is now made much simpler by the FLEXCEL Direct System. "We're proud to be installing a second FLEXCEL Direct System at Carey Color, because it demonstrates how the market has realized the value in its innovative imaging quality and productivity benefits," said John O Grady, Managing Director, United States & Canada Region and Vice President, Eastman Kodak Company. "Carey has been extremely successful at driving the adoption of elastomer technology with flexo printers and we look forward to a long and prosperous partnership with them." ASL Print FX, a KODAK FLEXCEL NX System Customer, Scoops Leading Award in Flexo Label Printing Industry

ROCHESTER, N.Y., Oct. 14—Ontario, Canada-based ASL Print FX recently asserted its position as one of world’s best flexo label printers by capturing the first ever World Label Association’s “Best of the Best” award for its Rennie Estate Winery label at the Global Label Awards in Brussels. The international award, considered to be the most prestigious of the label industry, is only open to World Label Award recipients, an honor that ASL achieved earlier this year for the Rennie label. An impressive honor on its own, ASL bested worthy competition from 223 entrants around the world to win the World Label Award. The victory was unprecedented because it marked ASL’s third year in row as a recipient of a World Label Award.ASL uses KODAK FLEXCEL NX Plates for all its label production and, since the installation of its FLEXCEL NX System in September 2008, has invested considerable effort in the optimization and standardization of its print production process. "The FLEXCEL NX System is fundamental to our print production capabilities,” says Stacy Daly, VP and General Manager, ASL Print FX. “It provides a consistent and stable foundation that delivers outstanding print quality day in and day out. We have gained a reputation for award-winning label production, but the beauty of the KODAK Solution is that we achieve our high quality under truly efficient daily production conditions.”ASL utilizes KODAK PRINERGY POWERPACK Workflow and KODAK STACCATO Screening to print all its labels using full stochastic screening, a production workflow that was recently not possible in flexo printing.“We have recently invested in additional upgrades for our PRINERGY Workflow installation, and it is clearly recognized as an industry standard by our brand clients,” said Daly. “Long-term partnerships are very important to us, and Kodak’s ability to provide us with complete leading-edge solutions makes them the perfect partner for ASL.”Kodak customers around the world are using FLEXCEL Systems to deliver outstanding results to their customers and are rewriting the flexo packaging “rules.”“On behalf of Kodak I would like to extend our congratulations to the whole team at ASL Print FX for their outstanding achievement,” says John O’Grady, Kodak Vice President and Regional Managing Director, U.S. and Canada. “Together we are changing the game in regards to the capabilities of flexo printing, and high-quality, efficient label production. It is an exciting time to be in the label industry, and we are honored to be key partners with ASL.”About Kodak Kodak is a technology company focused on imaging for business.
